The Surf Lodge – Montauk, New York

You don’t have to ride the waves to stay at The Surf Lodge, but its on-the-beach location can’t be beat for those seeking immediate access to sun and surf.

The Surf Lodge is a summer-season only resort, and rooms tend to book quickly, but it’s worth the effort to book one when you can.

A quick word about Montauk. In the minds of many, Montauk is just another part of the Hamptons. It isn’t. It is Hampton-adjacent, but Montauk remains more of a blue-collar town, where people live and work year-round, and where the ultra-glitzy see-and-be-seen nightclubs exist side-by-side with decades-old family restaurants.

The room selections at The Surf Lodge were wonderfully simple – Standard King, Junior Suite, and Grand Suite. I opted for a Junior Suite. The private deck with hammock and front row seats to the sunset was perfect.

And when it’s in season, The Surf Lodge definitely is one of “In” places to be. Spaces on the beach and deck can be reserved and were ideal spots to let the sun, surf, and music work their magic.

And when the sun goes down, the beat goes up! The deck at Surf Lodge was the destination for drinking and people-watching on Montauk. Add in the new Casa Sereña Mediterranean-inspired waterside restaurant, you could almost think of The Surf Lodge as an all-in-one destination.

And for the full Montauk experience I visited these wonderful places:

Montauk Lighthouse: At the very end of the eastern tip of Long Island is the famous Montauk Lighthouse, located next to Montauk State Park. This historic spot was New York’s first lighthouse and continues as the nation’s fourth-oldest lighthouse still in operation. Tours were inexpensive, regular, and fascinating. You could also take a picnic lunch and enjoy the grounds.

Get Pancakes: Stroll down Montauk Highway and look for John’s Pancake House and Anthony’s Pancake House. They’re across the street from each other and both have fierce loyalists. Go to both and you decide!

Surf & Sand: Montauk let me enjoy the best of both worlds. When it comes to sand, do your exploring at Hither Hills State Park. When you’re ready to catch a wave, head over to Ditch Plains.

Stephen Talkhouse: Just up the road on Main Street in Amagansett I found Stephen Talkhouse. You’ll probably find this one of the best live music venues on Long Island. Big acts regularly stop in to play sets and many of the local bands playing on the weekends show why they have such a coveted spot – good music that fills the house.
