Longboat Key, Florida
My family recently enjoyed our third stay in as many years at the stunning Resort at Longboat Key Club.
It’s an amenity-rich retreat nestled along the Gulf of Mexico on Florida’s serene west coast, just a short drive from Sarasota. Offering a blend of luxury, relaxation, and recreation, this resort has something for everyone, from poolside lounging and beachfront tranquility to world-class golf, state-of-the-art tennis and pickleball courts and a highly rated spa with locally influenced treatments (that we admittedly didn’t get to try).
Accommodations
We stayed in a spacious two-bedroom, beachfront suite featuring a massive balcony with breathtaking views of the Gulf. The suite boasted a fully-equipped kitchen, two pristine bathrooms, a washer and dryer, and three smart TVs – though we spent little time indoors. At 1,750 square feet, the suite was recently updated with tasteful, modern décor and exuded comfort and elegance. While it may not rival the ultra-luxury feel of the nearby St. Regis Longboat Key, the accommodations are well-appointed and sure to satisfy even the most discerning traveler.
Resort Amenities
Guests have access to an impressive array of amenities, including:
Golf: Two championship courses – the 18-hole Links on Longboat and Harbourside, which features three nine-hole courses.
Dining: Three on-site restaurants – Latitudes for fresh seafood, Portofino for classic Italian cuisine, and The Tavern & Whiskey Bar for farm-to-table dining.
Recreation: Tennis and pickleball courts, fitness center with group classes, and a full-service spa.
Casual Options: Spike N’ Tees and The Banyan Poolside Lounge offer convenient, casual bites, though they don’t quite reach the caliber of the main dining venues.
Dining Highlights:
While on property, we especially enjoyed Latitudes for its exceptional seafood and stunning views, and The Tavern & Whiskey Bar for its creative, farm-fresh menu. Though we have yet to try Portofino, it promises an enticing Italian experience. Room service is generally good (try the eggs benedict and ice cream sandwich cookies)!
For dining beyond the resort, the surrounding area offers an array of culinary gems:
Columbia Restaurant: A historic Spanish restaurant in St. Armands Circle dating back to 1905 with a vibrant atmosphere and an extensive menu. Favorites include Pollo Manchego, Empanadas, and Shrimp al Ajillo.
Dry Dock Waterfront Grill: A busy, popular spot with stunning bay views. The shrimp, crab cakes, and bacon-wrapped scallops are standouts.
Shore Longboat Key: Swanky and modern with a lively bar and bayfront dining. The menu offers an excellent mix of fresh, creative dishes with a sizable drink list.
Harry’s Restaurant: A local institution, (in business for 45 years!) with a charming atmosphere and a mix of elevated meats, pastas, and seafood. Their desserts are unforgettable – perfect for special occasions.
Why Visit Longboat Key?
Longboat Key remains somewhat under the radar compared to Florida’s more tourist-heavy destinations, perhaps due to it being on the west coast. But it’s worth checking out! The area is perfect for travelers seeking a peaceful retreat with access to upscale dining, outdoor activities, walks on the beach, and breathtaking sunsets.
Getting There:
The closest airport is Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ), with Tampa and Fort Myers airports also within driving distance.
The Resort at Longboat Key Club delivers a high-quality, family-friendly experience with a touch of understated luxury. While it may lack the elite ambiance of the newly opened St. Regis … its charm, excellent amenities, and exceptional location make it an ideal choice for families, couples, or anyone looking for a relaxing getaway on Florida’s Gulf Coast.
