OCEAN COLONY – Amagansett, New York

I have stayed at the Ocean Colony several times.

Everytime I approach Ocean Colony I look for a huge restaurant sign that reads “LUNCH.” And just beneath is its calling card – LOBSTER ROLL. And just opposite LUNCH on Montauk Highway is Ocean Colony, a resort with cottages and apartments, not just rooms.

There are plenty of options and all are more-than-reasonable priced, absolutely ideal for both on- and off-season visits. In fact, Ocean Colony is one of the few places that provided access to the beauty of the Hamptons during colder weather.

It’s also one of the few places with direct access to a private beach. And – let’s face it – that’s what I go to the Hamptons for anyway, of course!!!

On multiple visits, I opted for cottages and apartments with kitchens. It was awesome to have snacks and drinks at hand every hour without hotel prices! And there was certainly no shortage of amazing places to eat, especially in nearby East Hampton.

One of the best things about Ocean Colony is that it really does provided a homey vibe. And the units with balconies and views of the ocean were wonderful!

Amagansett, just a small strip of land on Long Island, had so much to do close by. Plus, further east in Montauk:

Get pancakes: Since I couldn’t live on Lobster Rolls alone, I headed to Montauk for pancakes. I strolled down Montauk Highway and found John’s Pancake House and Anthony’s Pancake House. They were across the street from each other and both had fierce loyalists. Go to both and you decide!

Stephen Talkhouse: I really enjoyed Stephen Talkhouse, one of the best live music venues on Long Island. Big acts regularly stop in to play sets and many of the local bands played on the weekends. Good music that filled the house.

Amagansett: East Hampton, South Hampton, and Montauk, might have been bigger, but Amagansett had it all and more. This town had everything I wanted … from high-end boutiques to homemade ice cream.

Bring Your Board: Some of the best surfing on the east coast can be found at Ditch Plains in Montauk. I enjoyed watching from the beach, were I saw big-name surfers side-by-side with locals.

Dunes: I found that the Hamptons were much more than mega-mansions and money. It was loaded with unquestionable natural beauty. Public beaches were often branded some of the “best beaches in the U.S.” And the natural dunes found nearby at Hither Hills State Park were the perfect place for a walk.
